Art with a side of nostalgia
Sunraysia has a way of shaping those who grow up within it – through its fresh produce, its sense of community, and its deeply rooted culture of shared meals. For Mildura artist Jacklyn Foster, known to many simply as Jack, these elements form the foundation of a creative practice that celebrates the beauty of domestic life.
Jack’s artistic journey began early, selling a first painting at just 15. Her business was officially established in 2019, transitioning into full-time work in 2021. Before returning home two years ago, Jack spent a decade living in Geelong, where her early pieces gravitated toward kitchens, dining scenes and nostalgic table settings. At the time, the theme felt instinctive; now, it is clear those works were an artistic expression of the family rituals and connections that define regional life.
Today, Jack’s practice is firmly grounded in the everyday rituals that bring people together – the weekly Sunday dinner, a bowl of fruit on the counter, the familiar comfort of classic Australian treats, and the moments shared over a kitchen table. Her upbringing in Sunraysia, surrounded by fresh local produce and a community that values time spent together, continues to influence the colours, textures and subjects in her work.
Operating from a home-based studio in Mildura, Jack creates original acrylic paintings on canvas, limited edition prints, poster prints, and a range of practical pieces featuring her artwork, including tea towels and tote bags.
Jack’s portfolio reflects both nostalgia and modern Australian domestic life, rendered through vibrant palettes and familiar imagery. Her intuitive, contemporary style has attracted national attention, leading to collaborations with brands such as Greens Foods Australia, Mont Marte, Princess Highway and Green Hip Workwear. Her work has also featured in projects for the Royal Children’s Hospital and RSPCA Victoria’s 150th anniversary. In 2025, she served as the Spotlight Stores Artist in Residence at the Melbourne Royal Show, painting live for eleven days and sharing the stories behind her kitchen-inspired creations.
At the heart of Jack’s practice is a desire to bring warmth, connection and a sense of belonging into the homes of others. Each piece celebrates the rituals that form the fabric of everyday life – the meals shared, the conversations held, and the simple joy of gathering with the people who feel like home.
