“We just love the smell of leather,” customers often exclaim as they step inside Riverbend Leather’s inviting studio and shop. It’s a sensory experience that feels like stepping back in time – when craftsmanship and locally made goods were the heartbeat of every small town.
For founder Mark Corless, leatherwork wasn’t his first calling. After more than 30 years as a journalist, researching and writing about countless topics, Mark decided it was time to swap the keyboard for something more tactile. He wanted to create with his hands, to learn a skill steeped in tradition – and so Riverbend Leather was born.
Today, Mark’s passion for quality and functionality shines through every piece he makes. From belts, bags, wallets and clutch purses to dog collars, key fobs, braided bracelets and coin pouches, the range is as diverse as it is beautiful. There’s even the iconic ‘Wenty Whacker’, a heavy-duty leather and wire fly swat that’s become a local favourite. Blowflies beware!
Riverbend Leather is more than a retail space; it’s a hub for creativity and sustainability. Mark offers repairs and custom-made services, breathing new life into well-loved items and upcycling wherever possible. He also runs hands-on workshops, inspiring others to discover the joy of making something from scratch. These will be returning next year – so keep an eye out.
The past year has brought big changes for Riverbend Leather. After four wonderful years in Wentworth, the business has moved into a larger space in the Buronga Village Complex, giving Mark room to showcase his ever-growing range and welcome more visitors.
