Weaving connection through art
Patsy Doolan, a highly respected and accomplished Barkindji/Paakantyi artist, brings her deep cultural practice and connection to Country to life through weaving and jewellery making. Born and raised in Mildura, Patsy grew up immersed in the rich cultural landscape between the road and the Murray River at Gol Gol and Trentham Cliffs, moving with the seasons alongside her extended family. This deep connection to her roots and the land of her people profoundly influences her artistic expression.
In 2021, facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and work stresses, Patsy found solace and a new creative outlet in crafting unique Aboriginal designed jewellery. Her sister became a regular confidante, sharing in the journey of developing products, designs and sourcing native materials. Patsy’s creations incorporate a beautiful array of natural elements, including emu feathers, echidna quills, quandong seeds, ininti seeds, red sandalwood seeds, gumnuts and other native seeds. For Patsy, collecting these materials is an emotional experience, allowing her to express her deep attachment to her family and ancestral land.
The year 2023 marked a significant milestone for Patsy as she launched her own business, ‘Wiimpatja Nhuungku Designs,’ which translates to ‘Aboriginal Women Designs’. This venture expanded her artistic horizons beyond jewellery to include weaving baskets, dilly bags and earrings. Patsy continues to create one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces and generously shares her knowledge by holding workshops to teach community members these traditional crafts.
Patsy’s passion for her craft is evident in every piece she creates, and her greatest joy comes from making people happy with her art. Her work is a testament to her resilience, cultural heritage and the power of creative expression.
Her works are currently featured at Craft Victoria‘s “Dancing Hands” exhibition in Melbourne. This exhibition celebrates the enduring strength of First Peoples’ storytelling, culture and community, with each artist, including Patsy, contributing their unique voice to contemporary Aboriginal art. Experience her deep connection to Country firsthand. The exhibition runs until Saturday 2 August.
